Little did I think, when meeting the ghazal singer Tauseef Akhtar back in 2012, that the experimental collaboration we were about to embark on would still be going from strength to strength four years later. The idea of fusing old Welsh penillion (verses) with Urdu love poetry was quite an unusual one at the time, but one which gave rise to a collection of songs which have touched the hearts of those from Mumbai to Machynlleth.
Recently we heard that we had been nominated for the 'Best Group' award in the Songlines awards, and 'Moliannwn/Ishq karo' was nominated as 'Best Traditional Track' in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
Following on from several successful tours in Wales, England, and India and the tremendous response to the album which was released on Cerys Matthews' label 'Marvels of the Universe' jointly with Mwldan, Ghazalaw looks forward to a new exciting period, as we experiment with different musicians and instruments.
Ghazalaw is not a destination, but a journey, and we are greatly indebted to Eluned Haf a Nikki Morgan from Wales Arts International for prompting us to take the first steps, supporting us along the way, and encouraging us to continue searching for new horizons.
