Harris, Alan

Inis Nua USA theatre project

Alan Harris was supported to travel to Japan to take part in the rehearsal process for a new play commissioned by the New National Theatre Tokyo and National Theatre Wales (The Opportunity of Efficiency). Discussing the visit, Alan said: "I was able to see, first-hand, if the choices I had made in writing the play had worked – or not. While in Tokyo I was able to work with the translator of the play (Kaku Nagshima) at the theatre and answers queries from the director, actors and other creatives involved. Also I was able to look at the text along with the theatre’s producer, Mariko Takase and the translator, and make changes that were required. It was interesting to see how the text had changed while transposed to a different culture and with different social norms and standards. The grant was vital for me to think about the nuts and bolts of collaborating with a foreign theatre and how to write for actors who do not share the same mother tongue".
