Jorge Lizalde Cano - Cymru and I in Japan - 2015

Lizalde Cano, Jorge

Cymru & I in Japan

Jorge Lizalde Cano was invited to collaborate in Japan with choreographer and dancer Yo Nakamura and received support to take up the opportunity. Following the visit, Jorge stated:

"‘Cymru & I in Japan’ is a cross-disciplinary project, exploring dance, video and photography between me and choreographer/dancer Yo Nakamura. The Project started in 2014 as part of Waleslab development fund by National Theatre Wales.

On this occasion we continued expanding on the film created together in Aberystwyth, creating a second one. This time exploring more profoundly the meaning of welsh word "Hiraeth" through Yo’s personal life in Japan. Interviewing locals and visiting the places she had lived, from Tokyo, her actual residence, to Nagaoka where she born and never visited since she left before celebrating her first year of life. A data collecting journey to create and illustrate somehow her Hiraeth.

Thank you to Wales Arts International I was able to continue with the development of the project and the artistic relationship with Yo Nakamura but also open the links of a possible presentation of the final format or staged show in Japan as well as the UK in 2016.

WAI funding has been a massive significantly opportunity for me and my practice, moving from working at a national level in Wales and the UK to do my first international collaboration. Exploring new ways to connect my work with other sectors (dance) as an image maker, overcoming and explore new ways of working in unknown languages (Japanese) but also an opportunity to know Japanese culture which have had many influences on my own practice. Meeting with local artists but also sharing our work produced here in Wales as well as the produced in Japan.

My ambition still continues to be working with Yo Nakamura and explore other sustainable long-term opportunities to strengthen links between Wales and Japan."
