Wales Arts International and Welsh Music Foundation attended WOMEX in Copenhagen at the end of October 2009.
WOMEX is the world's biggest, ethnic, traditional, alternative world, local and minority language music gathering. The showcase, trade fair and conference is the perfect opportunity to network and develop relationships with international partners.
The Wales at WOMEX stand was a joint venture between Wales Arts International and Welsh Music Foundation and was a base for a host of organisations and individuals including Sain Records, Gwymon, Rhys Mwyn, Here be Dragons and Label Abel.
Wales Arts International were there to promote and develop new international leads, contacts and opportunities for musicians and the music sector from Wales, while promoting the World Music from Wales publication which was created in 2008. The publication is used to promote Welsh World Music and is distributed in festivals such as WOMEX, Celtic Connections and SXSW. A matching USB stick with tracks from leading Welsh musicians, as well as other useful information about music in Wales, accompanies the directory.
In 2009 Wales Arts International and Welsh Music Foundation also created a CD of Music from Wales that was distributed during the 2009 WOMEX Showcase and Celtic Connections / Showcase Scotland2010, the leading Celtic folk showcase. Wales Arts International and Welsh Music Foundation were overwhelmed by the response and quality of tracks that were received. Please see below for further information on the artists chosen for the Music from Wales CD 2009.
Both the CD and World Music from Wales publication will serve as a guide for international producers, promoters and curators to develop their knowledge about the world music genre in Wales.
Welsh Music Foundation is core funded by the Welsh Government and offers information, advice and support to music enterprises through a range of projects and initiatives.
