Dan Rees - Nomas Foundation - Road Back To Relevance 2016

Today, Horizons, the music partnership between WOMEX 13 Hosts Wales and England, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland announced the artists selected to showcase on the Horizons home stage at WOMEX 13, Cardiff this coming October. The artists selected will represent the very best emerging world music from these neighboring nations at the leading world music showcase event.

The showcases on the Horizons stage are part of the programme of prestigious official WOMEX showcases hosted at Wales Millennium Centre on the 24-26 of October. Selected artists will perform for 45 minutes hoping to attract the attention of the 2,500 or so international WOMEX delegates, among them the leading music managers, festival and venue programmers and recording company executives of the world. A successful showcase can lead to international tours, recording deals and management contracts. International music careers often begin here.

These WOMEX Showcase Festival evenings are also public events where music fans from across the UK and further afield will join the music industry to enjoy the very best emerging world music from across the planet and spot the next stars to grace the global stages of such festivals as WOMAD, Musicport, Rainforest World Music Festival, and Sunfest.

Horizons members are Arts Council England, Arts Council Northern Ireland, Arts Council Ireland, Cerdd Cymru : Music Wales, Creative Scotland, Scottish Music Industry Association and Culture Ireland and the partnership is supported by British Council. Scotland, Ireland and England each have two Showcase slots on the Horizons stage, whilst Wales, as host nation for this year’s WOMEX has three showcase slots to fill.

Announcing Wales’ artists selected for three prestigious showcase opportunities, Lisa Matthews of Cerdd Cymru: Music Wales said:

"We’re delighted that 9Bach, Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita and Georgia Ruth Williams have been selected by the partners and industry panel to perform at Horizons at WOMEX

"This year Georgia Ruth has had critical acclaim and national radio play with her debut album. Similarly Catrin Finch’s recent collaboration with kora player Seckou has literally been front page news in the music press! After a taster in 2010, WOMEX want more of 9Bach and it’s an opportunity to perform the new works they have recently recorded. This opportunity is perfectly timed for all three acts and we know they will do Wales proud."

Artists from other nations of the UK and Ireland chosen to perform on the Horizons stage include: Lokkhi Terra (England), Family Atlantica (England), WeBanjo3 (Ireland), Kan (Ireland), Fiona Hunter (Scotland), and Ross Ainslie and Jarlath Henderson (Scotland).

WOMEX received more than 850 proposals from all around the world. 38 were shortlisted for the Horizons stage for the 9 slots by a panel of the UK and Ireland partners and independent music professionals. They represent the very best and most exciting world music talent emerging from each nation right now.

The Horizon’s brand name was inspired by poet, Gwyneth Lewis’ words on the front of Wales Millennium Centre ‘In these stones, horizons sing’. Wales Millennium Centre, along with Motorpoint Arena will host Womex 13, Cardiff, 23-27 October 2013. ‘Horizons’ expresses something about the partnerships ambition to develop and broaden their musicians’ horizons.

The international WOMEX showcases - which include Horizons showcases - will be presented over three nights, Thursday 24, Friday 25 and Saturday 26th October, across 5 stages within Wales Millennium Centre and the Roald Dahl Plass. A ticket provides music fans young and old with a round the world music experience, and the chance move around, taste the music cultures from each corner of the globe, and experience some truly international virtuosic performances.
