Gulp - SXSW 2014

Pryce, Guto

Gulp received support to attend SXSW 2014 in Austin, Texas.

Following the event, band member Guto Pryce said:

"This project enabled Gulp to attend SXSW 2014 in Austin, Texas which would not have been possible without the financial assistance of Wales Arts International.

As a world renowned music conference, SXSW provided the opportunity to meet record labels and music industry figures from America and beyond and also showcase Gulp's music to a new audience enabling foundations to be set for further U.S. and worldwide activity.

Our presence meant Gulp could build a foundation to promote the band in the U.S. As a consequence of Gulp's attendance, a licensing deal in North America for the release of debut LP 'Season Sun' on Everloving Records was secured. It was extremely useful to meet the label as well as the promotional press and radio team who would eventually work on the record, firstly to secure the deal and then to plan a marketing campaign for the album.

In addition, this event eventually led to the licensing of the record in the UK with Sonic Cathedral records with a European and Rest Of The World distribution deal through Berlin based !K7.

Gulp's presence in Austin enabled the band to perform to other industry figures as well as audiences from around the world to help build general awareness.

As a self managed unit, Gulp gained general knowledge and experience of the music industry through meetings with various figures. Valuable experience was also gained from the logistical aspect of travelling to Texas to perform.

It was fantastic to see Welsh bands and the Welsh music industry represented so strongly at this year's SXSW, many of which had received assistance from WAI. This goes a long way to help musicians and the industry in Wales continue to gain the international recognition it deserves and helps a vibrant and exciting music scene to develop further and reach a global audience."
