Applied Art Residency at Valle Crucis Abbey, Llangollen

Artist Bursary: £15,000 for 6 months starting February 2013 This residency is part of a collaborative partnership between Cadw Wales and the Arts Council of Wales. Applications are invited from contemporary applied artists based in the UK and overseas who wish to develop their practice within the context of one of Cadw’s historic monuments. The Cistercian Abbey of Valle Crucis lies just a few miles outside the International Eisteddfod town of Llangollen at the foot of the steep climb to the Horseshoe Pass. Its elegant eye-catching ruins sit on the west bank of a little stream which eventually feeds into the River Dee. In the 1790s, the scene was captured by J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851): other artists in search of the Picturesque and Romantic also visited the abbey including Paul Sanby (d.1809) and John Sell Cotman (d. 1842). The abbey itself contains many original and beautiful architectural details with stonework such as rose windows, a feature favoured by the Cistercians, an elaborately decorated stone screen and a collection of carved memorial stones dating from the Middle Ages. Valle Crucis Abbey offers contemporary artists a wealth of images and history to inform the development of contemporary applied arts. If you are interested in this opportunity please contact for a full artist brief. Deadline for applications is 9th November 2012.

MOSTYN Open 18: Call for Submissions

Since its inception in 1989, the Open has functioned as a call-out to artists of any age, geographical background and residing place to enter, with an exhibition of the selected artworks taking place at MOSTYN, and a prize of £10,000 awarded to a single artist or collective. While continuing in this tradition, the 18th edition will also bring a fundamental addition. A prize of £1000 will be given to the ‘People’s Choice’, which will be determined by the artist or collective who receives the most votes from the visiting public during the exhibition’s run. In doing so, the questions that will be raised, and central to this renewed edition, are: How do we examine and judge works of art? What criteria do we bring to perceiving, interpreting and understanding artwork? What really makes our favourite? The selectors for Mostyn Open 18 are, Adam Carr, Curator of MOSTYN; Alfredo Cramerotti, Director of Mostyn; Ryan Gander, Artist; and Maria Lind, Director of Tensta Konsthall. And you, the visiting audience, for the ‘People’s Choice’. KEY DATES AND SUBMISSION PROCESS 26th June 2012 – Open Call opening date 30th July 2012 – Deadline for payment of £25 entry fee and receipt of completed registration form. 6th August 2012 – Closing date for submission form together with images of artwork by email. Artist-in-Residence Opportunity at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT)

This residency is part of a new strategic partnership between the Arts Council of Wales & the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) is inviting applications from, both UK and international artists working in film, photography or digital media, who wish to develop their practice through working at CAT for a period of twelve months by engaging with its research projects and its community of staff. Hosted by CAT and funded by the Arts Council of Wales, the residency offers the opportunity to access time and space away from their usual practice to work in the context of a cutting edge research project. The residency will provide a time to absorb the cultural implications of CAT’s Zero Carbon Britain (ZCB) work, both through the findings of work to date and in joining the team of researchers during the current phase of their investigation; providing an opportunity to meet new people, sourcing new material and experiencing life in a new location. The residency will also allow the artist(s) to interpret, explore and engage with the wider learning context offered through CAT’s ‘living laboratory’ of hands-on projects.
