“Seachtain na Gaeilge – literally Irish week – has grown to be an almost three week festival in March celebrating the Irish language around the world and encouraging people to speak it. Growing up with Irish helped me understand more about Wales when I arrived to work there and so I wanted to share this film work by artist Ríonach Ní Néill.
It asks the question: What would compel you to go against the status quo and bring up your family as Irish speakers in English-speaking Ireland of the 1950s to 1980s?
In I Modh Rúin (in secret), Ríonach blends artforms, dance, interviews and music to tell the story of five women who did just that. In the week of International Women’s Day, this celebration of intergenerational female solidarity feels especially apt.” - Fearghus Ó Conchúir
