Following a period of initial consultation this year, Welsh Government has now released its Draft International Strategy for Wales for comment.

Welsh Government is consulting on the following:

  • The strategic direction and focus for international relations;
  • the strategic goals and areas of expertise to promote Wales’ reputation and raise its profile;
  • and priority regional partners.

The initial consultation asked for views on how Wales should present itself internationally, informing the development of this draft document.

Welsh Government originally intended to publish a final strategy document this summer. However, with the UK Government’s decision to postpone Brexit until 31 October, and the lack of clarity to the nature of the UK’s future relationship with the EU caused by the ongoing negotiations, Welsh Government have taken the decision to use the feedback gathered during the last six months to produce a draft strategy for consultation instead.

Themes and issues raised so far

Wales Arts International (link) worked closely with the arts sector during the initial consultation period to offer an overview of the themes and issues raised, and to highlight topics that could be included in the strategy. Wales Arts International  set out ways for the strategy to amplify a new ambition and approach, making sure that Welsh culture is fulfilling its international potential.
