The call for applications for the third round of Fluxus Magnetic international Visual Arts residencies in France and in the UK will be open from 21 May to 15 of July 2024.

Following previous iterations with eight international partners and a total of 17 supported artists in two years, in 2024, Magnetic is expanding its network to two more residencies in Paris and London.

ABOUT MAGNETIC

Magnetic is a joint Franco-UK initiative under the umbrella of Fluxus Art Projects that brings together ten institutions to create a network of artist residencies in French regions and UK nations.

Each residency is based on a tandem partnership between a French region and a UK nation:

  • CAPC, Bordeaux, Nouvelle-Aquitaine for applicants based in England
  • Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge, England, for applicants based in Nouvelle-Aquitaine

  • Frac Grand Large, Dunkirk, Hauts-de-France for applicants based in Northern Ireland
  • Flax Art Studios, Belfast, Northern Ireland for applicants based in Hauts-de-France

  • Villa Arson, Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur for applicants based in Scotland
  • Cove Park, Helensburgh, Scotland for applicants based in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur

  • Frac Bretagne, Rennes, Britanny for applicants based in Wales
  • Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Aberystwyth, Wales for applicants based in Brittany

  • Bétonsalon, Paris for applicants based in England
  • Gasworks, London for applicants based in the Île-de-France region

Artists from each one of the five regions in France are invited to apply for the residency based in the associated UK nation; and artists from each UK nation are invited to apply for the residency based in the associated region in France.

You can find more information about the tandems and each residency on Fluxus’ website.

Societal and environmental issues are at the heart of the programme: the residencies are bespoke to each host institution and their immediate locality, where the artists are invited to respond to specific geographical, historical, social, or artistic contexts.

Magnetic 3 offers:

  • 2 months tailor-made residency in discussion with the institution’s curatorial teams
  • £ 2100/2500 € threshold monthly fee
  • Accommodation and access to a workspace
  • Curatorial mentoring
  • International networking opportunities

WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR APPLICATION

Timeline:

  • 21 May – 15 July: open call for applications
  • Second half of September: selection committees with interviews of preselected artists
  • Beginning of October: public announcement of Magnetic 3 laureates
  • November: residencies start

If you wish to apply, we ask for an artistic proposal outlining the relevance and singularity of your practice and research interests within the context and focus of the host institution you are eligible to apply for. Please note:

  • Applications are dedicated to contemporary visual artists
  • Applications are not open to students
  • Artists in both France and the UK are considered to be based in a region if they have an address (residence) within that region/nation
  • Applicants from England are invited to make one application only and can either apply to CAPC, Bordeaux or Bétonsalon, Paris.
  • All applications must be written in English; applicants based in Wales have the option of submitting an application in Welsh if they wish to
  • Joint applications (duo, collective, etc) are not accepted

We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds and encourage those from under-represented communities – across race, ethnicity, gender, low-income backgrounds, and applicants who are D/deaf, disabled and neurodivergent – to apply.

Please note that different access guidance applies to each residency host; our website offers a summary of each venue’s facilities and existing access arrangements.

We are open to discussing any specific requirements; if you require access support at any stage of the application process, please let us know.
